Poll: What is the future of software testing?

Please indicate your answer in comments to this entry:

1. Will depend on programming trends
2. Future of testing in automation: automated unit testing; automated functional testing
3. Software testing will get harder, more expensive and therefore less efficient
4. Software testing will always have a future. As long as developers will write code there will be bugs, and the need for specialists to test them
5. Reduction of QA costs, by increasing the quality of the code and reducing production time
6. Non-functional testing: performance, application security testing etc. should increase
7. Your forecast

Please note: the answers were selected from previous polls where specialists from QA related areas express their thoughts. I just want to share it so that we’ll be able to match it with our own vision.

  1. 1. Yes they will depend on software trends
    2. Both automated testing, the future will depend on the software trends and how much work it will take to automate. It will also depend on how current manufacturers of automation software get on board the new changes.
    3. I don't think much will change. There are always engineers that will figure out a way to do testing easier.
    4. I agree there is always going to be testing.
    5. Bugs and humans will be around so testers will be there. Cost will flucuate because there is always new features and new developers.
    6. There is always things we miss that should be tested that we don't have time to test. That is why we should automate.
    6. There will always be something to do.

  2. I believe we operate on a pendulum in software testing. The 90s saw a swing of the pendulum in the very structured/documented approach to testing, and when that became too cumbersome, software testing began swinging towards the more "agile", less structured direction. I sense that the momentum of this current swing is slowing a bit, however, as people begin to abuse the term "agile" and I believe that the testing discipline will soon begin to swing back in the other direction again. In the broader sense, however, I believe the future of software testing is strongly linked to automated testing, and how we deal with that. Development is changing and getting more streamlined, and is therefore getting done much faster. Testing will rely on automation to help keep up. If we don't grow the discipline of test automation, however, it won't be able to keep up. I've written a few articles about this, including an column at stickyminds.com called "Automation Déjà Vu...Again!" Check it out. In addition, I work with the Automated Testing Institute (ATI) (www.automatedtestinginstitute.com) which is an organization that seeks to further the discipline of test automation. Be on the lookout for a symposium that ATI is planning that will address the topic of the future of test automation. If you'd like to be kept up to date on the developing symposium, you can get on the mailing list by emailing events@automatedtestinginstitute.com.
